Against the Olympic Dream? Jerry Jones Surprises with His Opinion on Flag Football at the Games

Don't look now, but Jerry Jones is not alone when it comes to crazy Januarys in the NFL

As the NFL continues its offseason preparations, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones finds himself weighing in on a unique opportunity for the league: the inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. NFL stars such as Micah Parsons, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Tyreek Hill have already expressed interest in representing Team USA.

While the decision is far from finalized, Jones has made it clear that he is open to the idea, offering a perspective that contrasts with the concerns of other team owners. In a conversation with Front Office Sports, Jones addressed the potential participation of NFL players in the Olympic Games.

“(It’s about) timing, availability, conflicts, that type of thing,” he noted, adding that he wouldn’t be as concerned about injuries because flag football is less physical than traditional tackle football. While acknowledging that other owners’ apprehensions about injuries are “valid,” Jones seems optimistic about the potential global exposure the event could bring to the NFL and the sport of football.

The inclusion of flag football in the Olympics is seen by many as a significant opportunity to showcase American football on a global stage. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has also shown interest, calling the Olympics a “great possibility” to grow the sport internationally. Goodell, however, has emphasized the need for careful deliberation, as the discussion raises logistical and safety concerns. A definitive decision on NFL player involvement is expected within the next two months.

From a marketing standpoint, the 2028 Olympics present a golden opportunity for the NFL, and Jones appears to recognize the value of this global platform. Known for his business acumen, the Cowboys owner likely sees the potential for increased international exposure and fan engagement as a major win for the league.

For now, Jones has plenty on his plate as the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft on April 24, finalize scouting reports, and navigate free agency. Additionally, the organization is working through high-profile contract negotiations with star pass rusher Micah Parsons. Yet even amid these pressing matters, Jones remains attuned to the broader conversations shaping the future of football.

As the countdown to the 2028 Olympics continues, the debate over NFL player participation in flag football will undoubtedly intensify. For Jerry Jones, the prospect of seeing NFL stars compete on home soil is an exciting possibility, one that could redefine the league’s global reach and influence.
